prayer before meditation
_WEEK-4-Tim-use-all-week.jpg

Father, you created me

and put me on earth
for a purpose.

Jesus you died for me

and called me
to complete your work.

Holy Spirit, you help me

carry out the work
for which I was created
and called.

In
your presence

and name, Father, Son,
and Holy Spirit,
I begin my meditation.
May all my thoughts
and inspirations
have
their origin in you
and
be directed
to your
greater honor
and glory.

weird invaders

Jesus preached his message
using many parables.  Mark 4:33

One day a fish came upon divers,
photographing the dark depths of
the ocean. He swam off to warn
the fish elders about the wierd
invaders from outerwater. But they
ridiculed him, saying: "There's no
life in outerwater--too much oxygen
and not enough water. Besides, the
bright sun would kill all life. Some-
one used this "modern parable" to
illustrate how hard it is to explain to
people anything that is beyond their
experience. Jesus had a similar
problem when he tried to explain
God's Kingdom to people. It was
too far beyond their experience.
And so he turned to parables.

Why were parables helpful in help-
ing people grasp truths beyond
their experience? What is one
such truth I find hard to grasp?

Parables are earthly stories with
heavenly meanings.

The Lord forgives you

The Lord sent the prophet Nathan
to David to confront him about his
sins. David was plunged into
sorrow, saying, "I have sinned
against the Lord"...Nathan replied,
"The Lord forgives you."
2 Samuel 12:1, 13

A young disciple asked an old
Master this question, "Wise One,
how can I be sure that God will
always forgive me?" The Master
thought for a minute. Then he
pointed to a smudge of dirt on the
disciple's clothes. 'Little one," said
the Master, "Do you throw away
your clothes when they become
soiled?" "No, Wise One," said the
disciple. The Master replied,
"Neither will God throw you away."

To what extent do I find it hard to
to admit that I sin?

Sin has four characteristics:
self-sufficiency instead of faith,
self-will instead of submission,
self-seeking instead of benevo-
lence, self-righteousness
instead of humility. E. Paul Hovey
